International Trip First-Timers

The blogs talk about sunset cruises. We need to talk about adapter plugs and eSIMs.

If you're planning your first trip across an ocean with friends, the excitement can completely mask the logistical realities. You can't just use your phone. Your plugs don't fit the walls. And you might need a visa just to transit.

The Connectivity Problem

Do not rely on "finding Wi-Fi." The moment you land, you need internet to pull up your Tript itinerary, find your hotel, and tell your mom you didn't die. First, check your carrier. Some providers, like T-Mobile, have great international plans included. If yours doesn't, buy an eSIM before you leave. Airalo or Holafly let you install a data plan over Wi-Fi at home, so it instantly activates on the tarmac abroad.

The 6-Month Passport Rule

This ruins thousands of vacations every year: many countries will deny you entry if your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date. Check your group's expiration dates three months before booking flights.

Download Maps Offline

Pre-download the Google Maps "offline area" for your destination. Having a base map cached on your phone is a lifesaver when you hit a cellular dead zone in a foreign city.
